An ode to racism and American’s favorite past-time: baseball, designer Umit Benan paid homage to baseball legend Jackie Robinson with his eponymous FW14 collection. With an all Black cast to help bring this fluid vintage collection alive these looks are not only inspiring but modern. The baseball varsity aesthetic has been big from a while now and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. What Benan manage to do in order to take the new staple to the next level is play with the shapes and cuts of the garments. The supreme tailoring stood in the outfield while the ritzy textiles were up at bat. Of course, denim had to be use to authenticate this collection but the winter whites, quilting, leather and hats are lush and just weather-beaten enough without making it to course. The fit and styling reflect that of the 1940’s but smooth enough to be donned today. I think the hats and bags are sharp, that coat in look nine is too awesome.
A dapper and radical collection just in time for Martin Luther King Jr Day!
